The bulk of humanity go through their lives like butter going down a pelican's gullet. They slide through the darkness, unaware - only to get catapulted out the other end onto the jagged rocks below. Most folks have no choice in the matter. The recipe is old, the bird is known and all the mockery of life that follows is the execution of a ritual.

A few catch a sneaky glint of something else, realize they want nothing to do with it, coat themselves in lard, squeeze their eyes shut hold their nose and dive in head first. With the mercy of time, they may even be able to convince themselves that they had no other choice.

But you. You soldiers get a choice. A genuine choice. Probably both the first and the last one you'll ever get. Go on this mission without caring if you live or die and I can assure you that you will live. Or, raise the flags and whistles of caution and I can guarantee your death. This is the nature of choice, made suddenly real and palpable by the only thing that really matters in life and yet ironically is the one thing that can not matter to you at this moment - death.
