A diverse population is a population that can withstand stress - minor or major. Variety comes from quantity and crossbreeding. You may have six billion apple trees but if they're all golden delicious then they're all going to die from some clever parasite. However, if you plant six billion seeds, well then you're going to have some wildly different trees. Apples, in fact, do fall far from the tree - which is why all commercial apples are clones - and why they are so prone to disease.
So if you strangle the quantity - one child per couple, then you strangle the variety. Not only are there less genetically different beings out there - there is less enviromental difference. Imagine a nation of only children - every single adult without any siblings. Now that is lack of variety.
