Audiences expect the expected. Really. Teach them a new curveball and soon they'll expect that too. Erudite becomes idiom becomes cliche. So go the other way.
Start with the cliche. Ron is the hard knock x-police officer turned detective. Yawn. Mary is the x-wife who left him because work was the only thing that ever mattered to him. Snore.
So write the scene three quarters of the way through the story where Mary should be falling backwards in love with Ron and vice versa.
