Put a Happy Face on it

"Those wreathes hanging on the doors are for Thanksgiving, right?"

"No.  Actually those are Christmas wreathes.  Haven't you been to the stores?  They just skip Thanksgiving and go straight to Christmas.  It makes me crazy.  Where are the turkeys?  Why do they have to go straight to Christmas, straight to selling stuff.  I don't get it."

"What's wrong with Christmas?"

"Nothing.  I just mean that they are way ahead of themselves.  They should wait until after Thanksgiving to start with the music and the decorations and whatnot."

"And what are you doing about it?"

"Complaining, I guess.  I mean, to all the people except the ones that matter, really."

"And what does that do?"

"Gets them to complain too, right?"

"Consider the idea that any emotion - negative or positive - is marked as a win by advertising executives."

"What?"

"Emotion sells.  It doesn't matter if you're ecstatic or furious about Christmas.  The purpose is simply to evoke an emotional reaction.  Your reaction happens to make you complain.  Other people talk perhaps about how much they love the holiday."

"I get it.  Whatever the reaction, it gets people talking."

"So long as it is emotional."

"Can't people talk about a rational reaction?"

"Rationality doesn't sell.  Emotions sell."
